Need to add a spring to your step?
The Havanese is a fun companion breed known for it's springy gate! (This is because a Havanese's front legs are shorter than their back legs.) While the Havanese may be small, it has a ton of personality. This breed is not "yappy" or "snappy' like many toy breeds.
As the National Dog of Cuba and the country's only native breed, all Havanese in the United States can be traced back to 11 immigrants. It is believed that the Havanese is a decendent of the Bichon Family.
Before the name Havanese was coined, it was once known as the Spanish Silk Dog because of it's luxurious, soft, and silky hair. (Also great for humans with allergies!) We like to keep our Havanese in puppy cuts, but you can let them grown long, or even cord their hair! The Havanese require frequent grooming to eliminate matting.
The AKC (American Kennel Club) has recognized the Havanese as a registered breed since 1996. It is currently a member of the toy group. The AKC describes the Havanese as "...Trainable and intelligent and possesses a naturally affectionate temperament, which making the breed an ideal family pet. Although a toy dog, they remain energetic and require some form of daily exercise. The breed's non-shedding coat makes it suitable for allergy sufferers, but regular grooming is necessary to keep the coat in top condition."
